The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has launched a significant endeavor titled "Deployment and Operation of Internet Access Networks in the Southern Region." The project's primary objective is to extend broadband internet access via fiber optic networks to residents in 23 municipalities and 44 municipal districts across the country’s southern region.
Representing one of the largest investments by the Dominican State, totaling USD 19,381,440.42, this initiative marks a pivotal step towards enhancing connectivity in underserved areas.
Enhancing Nationwide Connectivity
Nelson Arroyo, President of the Indotel Board of Directors, underscored the importance of delivering quality connectivity to the southern region, emphasizing its potential to catalyze socioeconomic development and foster new opportunities for residents. He framed the project as an investment in progress, promoting equal opportunities and sustainable development, in alignment with the government's commitment to enhancing the lives of Dominicans.
In context, President Luis Abinader has reinforced the universal right of access to broadband internet and the productive utilization of ICT through Decree 539-20. This strategic directive seeks to narrow the digital divide and facilitate various initiatives to enhance nationwide connectivity.
Bridging Digital Divide
The communities set to benefit from this initiative are located in the provinces of Azua, Bahoruco, Barahona, Elías Piña, Independencia, Pedernales, San Cristóbal, San José de Ocoa, and San Juan, encompassing an estimated population of approximately 142,605 individuals.
Moreover, the project aims to provide complimentary internet access to 343 public institutions within the targeted areas, including schools, municipal offices, hospitals, and police detachments. Additionally, underserved populations residing in the coverage zone will gain access to an affordable internet plan offering speeds of 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload for $299 pesos, taxes included.
